One blood test, several answers
The NIPT test in Nepal analyzes tiny fragments of your baby's DNA that naturally circulate in your bloodstream during pregnancy, screening for common genetic conditions with high accuracy and no procedural risk.
- Trisomy 21
Down Syndrome
The most common chromosomal condition NIPT screens for, detected with high sensitivity.
- Trisomy 18
Edwards Syndrome
A rarer but more severe chromosomal condition, caused by an extra copy of chromosome 18.
- Trisomy 13
Patau Syndrome
Caused by an extra copy of chromosome 13, associated with serious developmental effects.
NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic one. A high-risk result should always be followed up with diagnostic confirmation (e.g. amniocentesis) and genetic counselling. It does not confirm a condition on its own.

Simple blood draw
A routine maternal blood sample is taken from the mother's arm from around 10 weeks of pregnancy. No needle goes near the baby, so collection is non-invasive to the pregnancy.
- 3
Accredited lab analysis
Your sample is analyzed for fetal cell-free DNA to screen for common genetic conditions.

Reports are ready in 15 to 18 working days and shared privately, with our team available to walk you through what it means and any next steps.
What parents ask us about NIPT
Does NIPT reveal the baby's sex?
It can. NIPT looks at the sex chromosomes too, so the lab can report the baby's sex if you ask for it. Tell us when booking whether you want to know.
When in my pregnancy can I take the test?
From 10 weeks of pregnancy onwards. Before that there usually isn't enough of the baby's DNA in your blood for a reliable result.
Is NIPT safe for my baby?
Yes. It only needs a blood sample from your arm, so there is no risk of miscarriage or harm to the baby.
Is a low-risk result a guarantee that my baby is healthy?
No. NIPT is a highly accurate screen for specific chromosomal conditions, but it doesn't test for every condition and can rarely miss one. Keep up with your routine prenatal scans and checkups.
How long do results take?
Usually 15 to 18 working days from sample collection. We'll let you know as soon as your report is ready.
Do I need to fast before the blood draw?
No. You can eat and drink normally before the test.
Can the sample be collected at my home?
Yes. Choose home or hotel collection when booking and a trained clinician will come to you within Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.
Who can see my results?
Only you, and any doctor you choose to share them with. Results are never disclosed without your consent.

Recommended if any of this applies to you
The NIPT test in Nepal is suitable for most pregnancies, low-risk and high-risk alike. It's especially worth discussing with your doctor if:
- You are 35 years or older
- You have a family history of genetic or inherited conditions
- A first-trimester screening showed an abnormal result
- You have previously had a pregnancy affected by a genetic condition
- You simply want the added reassurance of a highly accurate screen
- You'd prefer to avoid invasive testing where possible
NIPT accuracy can vary in twin or multiple pregnancies and in certain situations. Our team will guide you on whether NIPT is appropriate for you before booking. If you are also due for routine prenatal bloodwork, we can help coordinate your tests and health checkup packages in the same visit.
Why expectant parents choose the NIPT test in Nepal first
| Factor | NIPT (blood test) | Amniocentesis / CVS |
|---|---|---|
| Risk from the test | None | Small but real risk |
| Sample | Maternal blood draw | Amniotic fluid or placental tissue |
| Earliest timing | From week 10 | Usually week 11-14 (CVS) or 15+ (amnio) |
| Result type | Screening (risk assessment) | Diagnostic (confirmatory) |
| False positive rate | Low | Not applicable: diagnostic |
Many pregnancies use NIPT as an early screening option, with invasive diagnostic testing considered when clinically indicated, including after a high-risk screening result.

NIPT test in Nepal: common questions
What is the NIPT test?
NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Test) is a blood test done during pregnancy that analyzes small fragments of your baby's DNA circulating in your bloodstream, to screen for common chromosomal conditions such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome and Patau syndrome. It's available through TeleMedBooking, with home collection across Kathmandu.
When can I take the NIPT test during pregnancy?
NIPT can be done from week 10 of pregnancy, once there is enough of the baby's DNA in the mother's blood for analysis.
Is the NIPT test safe for my baby?
Yes. NIPT only requires a standard blood draw from the mother, so there's no risk to the baby or the pregnancy.
How accurate is the NIPT test?
NIPT is highly accurate for the conditions it screens for, especially Down syndrome, with a low false-positive rate. It is still a screening test, so a high-risk result should be confirmed with diagnostic testing.
Is NIPT a diagnostic test?
No. NIPT estimates the risk of certain conditions. If your result is high risk, your doctor will discuss diagnostic options such as amniocentesis or CVS, along with genetic counselling.
Do I need a doctor's referral to book an NIPT test?
A referral isn't required to book, though we recommend discussing the test with your OB/GYN. You can also book a teleconsultation with one of our doctors.
Is home sample collection available for NIPT in Kathmandu?
Yes. Our team can collect your blood sample at home or at your hotel for a small additional fee, so you don't have to travel to the clinic.
